Spray Foam For Boat Insulation

Whether it’s a houseboat, canal boat, fishing trawler or luxury yacht, Enverge Spray Foam Insulation systems are the perfect choice to provide boat insulation. Most boats have curved surfaces constructed from timber, metal or plastic which can be subjected to harsh environmental conditions. Enverge Spray Foam Insulation has been used extensively to provide robust, airtight, and thermal insulation solutions for boat insulation projects of all shapes and sizes.

Enverge Spray Foam Boat Insulation Benefits

Boat Insulation

Depending on the type of boat structure that requires insulation, Enverge Nexseal LE Closed Cell Insulation is usually the common choice. It has strong adhesion to just about any susbtrate and boasts exceptional dimensional stability. Using pre-manufactured materials is often time-consuming and hard to fit into irregular shapes and can take up valuable space with limited thermal performance. Enverge Spray Foam Insulation is spray-applied as a liquid before expanding and rising to fill the void into which it is installed. This ensures that every inch of space is utilised efficiently with long-term, durable insulation that won’t shrink, crack, or degrade over time.

Boat Insulation Solutions

Boats come in different shapes and sizes and are used for many purposes including canal boats, fishing trawlers and house boats for living. Often located in harsh, damp, and cold environments, boat insulation is not only imperative to keep occupants warm and dry but can also reduce condensation and heat loss. When upgrading, refurbishing, or building a new boat structure, choosing the right insulation material is crucial to ensure that it fits into the available space to provide airtight performance whilst lasting for the life of the substrate into which it’s installed so that there are no expensive future upgrades or replacements. Enverge Nexseal LE Closed Cell and Sucraseal Open Cell spray foam insulation solutions address all the potential problems that pre-manufactured insulation materials may cause. Additionally, when using spray foam insulation, the speed of installation can help to considerably reduce the project timeline.

Is Spray Foam Insulation Suitable for Curved Surfaces?

Enverge Spray Foam Insulation is particularly suitable for curved surfaces as it reaches the substrate as a liquid before rising and expanding to fill the void. Where pre-manufactured insulation materials are difficult to cut, fit and bend into curved surfaces, spray foam insulation neatly follows the substrate profile to ensure that there is a seamless, monolithic and continuous thermal layer with no airgaps or pockets where condensation may form.

Can Open Cell Insulation be used to insulate boats?

We can recommend the use of Enverge Sucraseal Open Cell Insulation when used to insulate timber frame boat structures most found in house boats. Generally, we do not recommend the use of open cell spray foam when applied to metal substrates as it can lack cohesive strength. In boat assemblies where space is limited, open cell spray foam is unlikely to achieve the best thermal performance per inch unlike closed cell spray foam insulation which offers the best thermal values.

Should Spray Foam Insulation be covered over?

It is highly likely that whatever insulation material you choose to insulate a boat, you’ll want to cover over it to protect it and hold it into place. Whilst spray foam insulation does not require any fixings or to be covered over to remain in place, the risk of damage to the material is likely to be quite high which is why we always recommend covering it over to protect it. From an aesthetic perspective, covering over the insulation is usually preferred. Whilst spray foam can be installed to look neat and uniform, it is primarily insulation and not decoration!

Do I need to meet U-Value targets in House Boats?

With the exception that house boats float on the water rather than being constrained to land, yes, normal Building Regulations should be met. This means that the roof, walls, and floor of the houseboat structure will need to meet the relevant U-Values as shown in Part L of the Building Regulations. If you have a houseboat project underway or you’re considering moving off land and onto the water, our technical team are on hand to help specify the correct spray foam insulation materials to meet Building Regulations.

Can Enverge Spray Foam Insulation Be Installed Externally?

Yes, but when it comes to boats, we always recommend insulating the inside of the structure. Any type of insulation can be affected by UV light and the harsh environmental conditions can reduce its lifespan. Whilst Closed Cell spray foam insulation can be installed externally, it will always require a UV stable coating and a waterproof coating to ensure that it withstands environmental conditions. We do not recommend the use of spray foam insulation as a viable solution if you are looking to insulate the outside of the boat structure.

Does It Come with A Warranty?

Yes. All Enverge Spray Foam Installations attract a 25-Year Product Warranty and at least a 5-Year Workmanship Warranty. Spray foam insulation is one of the most durable insulation materials available in the UK, and it won’t shrink or degrade like some other pre-manufactured insulation materials. It requires no ongoing operational or maintenance input and will remain in place as a passive insulation solution that becomes a part of the building envelope, but we always recommend that it is covered to maintain its integrity and lifespan.
