Overview

Why spray foam for Dutch barns

Dutch barns are open on at least one side, so warm, moisture-laden air from drying hay, straw or livestock rises freely and meets a cold single-skin corrugated roof. Below dew point that vapour condenses on the steel and rains back down, soaking bales, spoiling fodder, accelerating corrosion and creating a damp store that no amount of ventilation fully cures.

Closed-cell spray foam is sprayed straight onto the roof underside, where it self-bonds and expands to follow the curved corrugated profile exactly. As a closed-cell system it resists water and warms the inner surface, so vapour no longer reaches its dew point against cold steel. Unlike loose boards or quilt, it leaves no gaps for moist air to bypass.

The result is a dry, better-insulated barn where hay and straw stay fit for use, machinery and steelwork stop rusting, and the roof's working life is extended. The seamless layer suits the irregular geometry of older agricultural roofs far better than rigid panels, and the warrantied system carries a 25-year manufacturer-backed product warranty.

Why spray foam

The benefits for Dutch barns

Stops Roof Drip

Lifts the cold corrugated surface above dew point so condensation no longer forms and rains onto stored bales below.

Protects Fodder

Keeps hay and straw dry and fit for feed, cutting spoilage, mould and the fire risk that damp bales carry.

Halts Steel Corrosion

Insulating the underside keeps purlins and sheeting dry, slowing the rust that shortens an exposed barn roof's life.

Follows Curved Profiles

Self-bonds to curved and corrugated sheets in-situ, sealing every flute that rigid boards would leave open.

Guards Machinery

A drier internal environment protects tractors, implements and stored kit from condensation-driven damage and damp.

No Strip-Out

Sprayed over the existing roof from inside with no need to remove or replace sound sheeting, minimising downtime.

The system

Built For Open-Sided Barns

Closed-cell Enverge foam self-bonds directly to the underside of a Dutch barn's curved corrugated roof as it cures, following every flute and curve without fixings. It forms a continuous warm-side layer that lifts the cold surface above dew point, ending the cold-weather condensation that ruins fodder and rusts steel.

ThermoFoam installs Enverge closed-cell spray foam (Nexseal LE), for which Duratite is the UK distributor of record. Applied to the clean, dry roof underside, the foam self-bonds as it cures into a continuous water-resistant layer that warms the inner surface and controls interstitial condensation on single-skin agricultural roofs.

In detail

Specification & compliance for Dutch barns

Closed-cell foam bonds chemically to profiled metal, box-profile and cement-fibre sheets, following every ridge and trough with no fixings, battens or framework. Because the foam carries its own integral vapour barrier, the cold underside that condensation forms on is removed in the same pass — a 15–25 mm coat is typically enough to stop drip, while 25–75 mm delivers a genuine thermal upgrade with U-values down to around 0.18 W/m²K in the right build-up.

Application progresses quickly across open spans, so live operations can usually keep running while zoned sections are sprayed. Where a fire-rated finish is specified, the foam is coated with DC315 intumescent to achieve Euroclass B-s2,d0, and every installation is handed over with full documentation and a 25-year manufacturer-backed product warranty.

FAQs

Dutch Barn insulation, answered

Will spray foam stop my Dutch barn roof dripping in winter?

Yes. Condensation drip happens when warm, humid air meets cold steel below dew point. Closed-cell foam sprayed to the roof underside warms that surface and resists moisture, so vapour no longer condenses and rains back down onto your bales.

Can you spray foam onto a curved corrugated barn roof?

Yes. The foam is sprayed in-situ and self-bonds to the substrate as it cures, expanding to follow curved and corrugated profiles exactly. It seals every flute, which is where rigid boards leave gaps that moist air can bypass.

Does the barn need to be closed in first?

No. Dutch barns are designed open-sided and we work with that. The closed-cell layer warms the roof's inner surface to control condensation even with open elevations, though reducing draughts onto stored fodder further improves the result.

Will it protect stored hay and straw from spoiling?

Yes. By eliminating roof condensation, the foam keeps bales dry and fit for feed, reducing mould, spoilage and the heat-and-fire risk that wet, decomposing fodder can create in a store.

Is the foam suitable for agricultural use and certified?

Yes. We install Enverge closed-cell foam (Nexseal LE), supplied with Duratite as UK distributor of record. It carries a 25-year manufacturer-backed product warranty and is suited to commercial and agricultural roofs.

What depth of spray foam does a Dutch barns need?

A 15–25 mm anti-condensation coat controls drip on most profiled metal roofs. Where thermal upgrade is the goal we typically apply 25–75 mm of closed-cell foam — the exact depth is specified after a free survey.

What fire rating can the system achieve?

Enverge closed-cell foam achieves BS 476 Part 7 Class 1 uncoated, and Euroclass B-s2,d0 when finished with a DC315 intumescent coating. We specify the right build-up for your building's use.

Can you work around a live operation?

Yes — application progresses across large areas each day in zoned sections, so production, storage and staff can usually continue working throughout.
