Spray Foam For Contiguous Piling Insulation

Contiguous Piling Insulation Using ThermoFoam | Spray Foam Insulation.

Contiguous Piling Insulation using Spray Foam can protect from moisture transfer into the building or structure.

Contiguous Piling Insulation can be achieved using ThermoFoam | Spray Foam Insulation. Our Nexseal LE Closed Cell Foam can help overcome concerns of cold thermal bridging through contiguous piling and into a building or basement. Closed cell insulation is the best solution for long-term thermal mass and is a viable alternative to Shot Crete or other methods of insulation.

Where To Use Spray Foam For Contiguous Piling

Contiguous piling is commonly used to separate earth or sand from the structure being built. It’s common in situations where there’s underground basements or structures are being built into an excavated hillside. Without adequate tanking or insulation, there is a high risk of moisture and cold bridging transferring through the building assembly to cause damp, condensation and mould issues within the structure. Nexseal LE offers a superb method of providing a thermal break to separate the outside from the inside.

Check out our Gallery where you will find some photographs of installations we’ve completed in the past. Whilst spray foam is insulation and not decoration, our experienced installation teams will always endeavour to provide a neat and tidy finish to the insulation. Nexseal LE closed cell is easier to achieve a neater finish whereas Sucraseal Open Cell expands at a faster rate to leave an undulated finish.

FAQs

Why is spray foam the best for piled walls?

Pilings are usually an irregular shape with undulations to provide the structural strength. Pre-manufactured insulation can be tricky to fix into place and there will always be air voids in the undulated zones which means airtightness is key to prevent condensation. Closed cell spray foam is the perfect solution because it can follow the curved nature of the pilings and provide a seamless, thermal layer for peace of mind.

Can the foam be left exposed?

Normally, the foam would be covered with a suitable lining when the building is complete. In habitable areas, this is mandatory as it would be with PIR board. During the construction process, if the foam is left exposed to sunlight, the UV rays can break the foam down and turn it a dark orange colour. We highly recommend painting over the foam if it is being left exposed during the construction process.

How long does an install take?

It depends on the thickness required and the available access. One team can insulation approximately 100m2 per day at 100mm thick. Good access to the install zone is important and ideally the floor area should be clear. It is also important that the substrate is dry, free first dirt and grease to guarantee adhesion. Damps surfaces can slow down the install process as our teams would need to manually dry them.

Do I need Open Cell or Closed Cell spray foam?

Open cell spray foam is a 0.5lb density and therefore a bit like a sponge! If moisture were to transfer through the pilings, there would be little to stop it penetrating the open cell and reducing the effectiveness of the thermal performance. We would virtually always recommend our closed cell foam for contiguous piling because it is rigid, high density, repels moisture and adds exceptional thermal performance.

How long will the spray foam last?

The closed cell spray foam is inert once applied. It does not change at all in its performance or density providing it is not damaged by external factors. A compliant application of closed cell foam should remain adhered to the surface onto which it’s applied for the life of the structure and it will not shrink, peel away or reduce in performance. We guarantee our installs for a period of 25 years with the expected life to be much greater.

Will Spray Foam Stop Moisture Transfer?

Contiguous piling should still be sufficiently tanked to stop moisture from transferring through the building assembly. Nexseal LE offers the thermal mass that reduces the dew point and therefore mitigates the condensation risk through thermal bridging.
