The challenge
Leisure centre sports halls are large-volume spaces that are expensive to heat and prone to high internal humidity from activity and occupancy. Where the roof structure is poorly insulated, heat is lost rapidly and warm, moisture-laden air meets cold surfaces overhead, producing condensation that can drip onto floors and equipment below.
The wide, open roof of a sports hall presents a large surface area with structural members, purlins and junctions that are difficult to insulate continuously. Board systems struggle to seal around these details, and any gaps create cold bridges and condensation risk in an environment where a safe, dry floor surface is essential.
The ThermoFoam solution
ThermoFoam specified Enverge Nexseal LE closed-cell spray foam, applied directly to the underside of the roof structure. The foam self-bonds as it cures, forming a continuous insulating blanket that follows the purlins and structural details without fixings, eliminating the gaps that boards would leave.
The closed-cell system combines insulation with vapour resistance, lifting the internal surface temperature above the dew point so the humid hall air no longer condenses overhead. This both reduces heat loss across the large roof area and controls the moisture risk inherent in a busy, high-occupancy leisure building.
The result
The sports hall roof was given a continuous, well-bonded layer of insulation that improved thermal retention and controlled the condensation risk above the playing area. The installation met the manufacturer-certified standard and carries the 25-year manufacturer-backed product warranty.
