Intumescent Coatings

Where Can I Use Intumescent Coatings?

  • Structural Steel

Many new build large structures are constructed using steel frames. The beams and columns that support any load bearing elements of the property will require fire proofing. Our coating systems provide up to 2 hours fire proofing depending on the steel thickness.

  • Structural Timber

Whether load bearing columns, beams or flooring, it's possible to fireproof timber for up to 60 minutes. Natural timbers generally perform better than man made OSB or Plywood and our systems are designed to fireproof a wide range of timber based structures.

  • Mezzanine Floors

The fireproofing of mezzanine floors is often overlooked. Usually constructed from a combination of steel or timber, these load bearing structures need to be adequately fire proofed for a minimum of 30 minutes. Depending on timber/steel thicknesses, up to 2 hours fireproofing maybe possible.

About Us

We are intumescent paint contractors, covering a wide range of commercial projects throughout the UK. Whether you need to protect structural steel or timber, we know what it takes to deliver a successful and compliant result. We’ve been involved in some of the most prestigious projects in the UK, including Claridges Hotel in Mayfair, Royal Wharf in East London and the Rolls Royce Factory in Chichester.

What Does Fireproofing Steel Beams Involve?

Painting steel beams sounds an easy job but it requires expertise and skill to achieve the right results. We firstly have to consider the bare steel grade to ensure its free of loose dirt and any surface rust. The beams then need priming with a zinc based solution at around 75-100 microns dry film thickness. Once primed it’s time to apply the correct thickness of intumescent paint, variable by steel size, to achieve compliance.

How Long Is The Install Process?

We use airless spray equipment for speed of install along with quality of finish and adhesion. Depending on the thickness of the coating required, we can cover up to 500 sq/m per day with two teams. This is subject to working conditions, ease of access and the working height logistics. 30-60 minutes of protection generally requires 1-2 coats whereas 90-120 minutes can take up to 4 coats to achieve the deemed dry film thickness of paint.

Can Steel Beams Be Coated If Exposed To The Outdoors?

Yes, it’s possible to coat steel beams exposed to the outdoors, it just requires different specifications and working practices. For starters weather will play its part. We need the temperatures to be above 5c and for the dew point to have little or no impact. A solvent based intumescent paint is usually the best option for steels that are left exposed to the outdoor environment. A topcoat should also be considered as an additional protective measure.

Do You Certify Or Guarantee Your Installs?

As regulations around fire protection become increasingly stringent, you need an intumescent coatings partner who realises the importance of delivering against precise specifications. We provide a compliance file at the end of each job to demonstrate accurate working practices throughout the process. This includes copies of our dry film thickness readings, product data sheets. application evidence and manufacturers certification.
